History

Note: About the writer of this history pages

The above history of the Sri Lankan Cultural society is written by Mrs Niranjala K Galhenage an Australian Sri Lankan who jointly pioneered the origination the Society.

This was written through her personal experiences as a first-generation migrant who arrived from the UK in 1980, with her husband and the two young sons. In Perth she saw the many opportunities this country presented to her. Her aspirations were boundless.

As the initiator of the formation of the Sri Lankan Cultural Society of Western Australia, with the strong support of her family, she wishes to share here her personal satisfaction of achieving one of the most fulfilling experiences.

The writer’s voluntary involvement in social work in the Sri Lankan community placed her in good stead in her major involvement as the Community Organizer with the Indian Ocean Arts Festival (IOAF). In 1984 she was elected to represent the Sri Lankan Community as their representative to the IOAF by the committee of the WA Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Association. Her voluntary work serving on the Committee of WASLA as the Secretary during 1981- 1983 had enabled her the good fortune to demonstrate her capabilities as an organizer.

It must be conveyed at this point; the writer acknowledges her family’s tireless support, standing behind her, having recognized her determination to take on the task, and her preparedness to work towards achieving the goal of formalizing our group.
